Avoid the radiation of your cell phone

Sihanoukville. Cell phones became a very important media in our technological time. In countries like Cambodia, it is not a luxury, but a very popular means of communication that can reach the most isolated regions. It is easier to put an antenna, than extend lines toward the poorest provinces, jungle areas and islands. Cell phones became so popular in Cambodia after the war that the development of desk phones is practically limited and most Cambodians do not use them. But now we have to care: The World Health Organization prevents that cell phones could be a cause of cancer. Not for alarming yet, but investigations are on the way, according to the WHO’s media center (see Electromagnetic fields and public health: mobile phones fact sheet.)

The fact is that cell phones are radio frequency transmitters and their power can be absorbed by the human body through the skin. According to WHO, it results in temperature rise in the brain and other parts of the body. The fact that cell phones are now an active part of modern life is enough for the scientists of the health to determine their effects on humans. There is not yet a complete report on the issue – nobody has been reported dead because cell phone usage, but a number of studies have determined that the cell phone power exposition has effects on brain electrical activity, cognitive functions, sleep, heart rate and bloody pressure. It is true also that the power energy of cell phones is too small (frequencies between 450 and 2700 MHz.)

Another fact is that cell phones became popular after the 1990s, and then it is a short time to make conclusions on cancer tumors and cell phone usage, according to the same scientists. Cancer can be produced for long-term exposure to radiofrequency fields. Currently, scientists are studying the effects of cell phone on child and young users.

Even if investigations still to determine the health risks on cell phone usage, experts recommend some healthy preventive attitudes. For example, if the phone is attached to your ear, you are getting its electromagnetic radiation directly to you. Experts recommend that the phone should be between 30 and 40 centimeters away from your body and then the use of handset would be just fine for your health. Other cell phone practices that are rather positive are the text messaging, Internet accessing and hands free that mean that the phone is located a little far from your body and that the cell phone needs less power expenditure in those functions. Exposure is also limited by the length of calls and the phone emits a bigger quantity of radiation when it is far from the antenna – if you are in a very far region where the signal is weaker, your phone will augment its power in order to get the signal. It is the reason why the use of cell phones is forbidden in hospitals and planes, because its radiofrequency signals may interfere with the electronic devices and navigation system, so the power of a phone is not too small at all.

The commercial devices to reduce radiation have not been proven effective, said the experts. So get safer in the use of your phone.
